Damiana leaf has a long history of use for its beneficial properties and amorous spirit. Native throughout Central and South America, damiana has been utilized for hundreds of years and can be traced back to the Aztec civilization and other indigenous tribes. Damiana has experienced a resurgence of popularity for its traditional uses as a nervine, digestive support, pleasure tea, and seductress.  

Our wildharvested damiana leaf is gathered in its natural habitat, deep in the mountains of Mexico where it has historically been infused to make damiana tea. A member of the Turneraceae family, Turnera diffusa is a woody shrub with small green leaves and aromatic, yellow flowers. The origin of the common name damiana is from the Greek daman or damia meaning “to tame or subdue.”

It is believed that the indigenous Guaycura tribe in the Baja region of Mexico were the first to use damiana. According to legend, the herb became widely distributed when the Guaycura began trading with the Aztecs. Damiana was also highly valued by the Mayans, who used the plant similarly. Typical preparations of damiana leaves include tea blends, herbal smoking mixtures, or macerated as damiana extract. Damiana leaves are often infused in alcohol to make liqueurs or cordials.
